FIRST COMMERCIAL ELECTRON BEAM STERILISATION FACILITY IN SOUTH EAST ASIA TO BE LAUNCHED IN M"SIA

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30, 2008 (Bernama) -- Electron Beam Sdn Bhd will launch South East Asia's first commercial electron beam irradiation facility in Malaysia this August. In a statement here, Electron Beam said a total investment of about RM35 million is expected to be made for the facility, which will have an initial capacity of 96,000 metric tonnes of irradiated products throughput in its first phase of operations. This will go up to 160,000 metric tonnes within two years.

The company will be importing German and Belgian technology that has been fully certified to European and international standards. Its irradiation is the cleanest and most environmentally friendly form of irradiation that uses a magnetic accelerator field to speed electrons that bombard the targeted material at light speed. The technology has beneficial biological applications such as irradiation of medical devices, food irradiation, mail sanitisation and advanced material advancement applications which include material enhancement and processing. -- BERNAMA
